Elijah

/ee-LY-juh/

אֵלִיָּהוּ

"My God is Yahweh"

1 Kings 17:1

RoleProphet; miracle worker; confronter of kings

Etymology

From 'El' (God) and 'Yah' (Yahweh). A defiant declaration of allegiance — 'My God IS Yahweh' — particularly powerful because Elijah spoke it in an age when Israel was torn between Yahweh and Baal.

Who they were

Elijah erupts into the biblical narrative without introduction — no genealogy, no backstory, just a man from Gilead standing before King Ahab and saying, 'As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, before whom I stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word.' Then he disappears into the wilderness, fed by ravens beside a brook. When the brook dried up, God sent him to a widow in Zarephath whose flour and oil miraculously never ran out. He raised her dead son to life. After three years of drought, Elijah confronted the 450 prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel in one of the most dramatic scenes in scripture. He rebuilt the altar, drenched it with water, and prayed. Fire fell from heaven and consumed everything — sacrifice, wood, stones, soil, and water. The people fell on their faces: 'The Lord — he is God!' Then rain came. But immediately after this triumph, Queen Jezebel threatened his life, and Elijah fled into the desert and asked to die: 'I have had enough, Lord. Take my life.' God's response was not rebuke but food, rest, and a gentle whisper on a mountainside. Elijah never died in the conventional sense — he was taken up to heaven in a chariot of fire, watched by Elisha. Malachi prophesied that Elijah would return before the great day of the Lord, and Jesus identified John the Baptist as Elijah's fulfilment. Elijah appeared with Moses at the Transfiguration, talking with Jesus. In Jewish tradition, a cup is set for Elijah at every Passover table. He is perhaps the most dramatic human figure in the entire Bible.
